Tips for Turning Your Church Newsletter into a Thriving Publication
Here are a few interesting notices taken from church newsletters (hopefully not all from the same one):
- Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.
- During the absence of our pastor, we enjoyed the rare privilege of hearing a good sermon when J.F. Stubbs supplied our pulpit.
- The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.
- The senior choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join the choir.
Typing errors and poorly written statements make these notices humorous, and while we laugh at them, we wouldn’t want to see these in our own church newsletter. But spelling and grammar are only a small part of what goes into a newsletter, and if you send an electronic newsletter, you should keep other guildelines in mind as well.
If you need a refresher or aren’t sure of the best practices for electronic church newsletters, Amy Scott-Lundy has put together a practical guide chock full of ideas to help you.

Is Your Church Newsletter Surviving or Thriving?

An e-mail newsletter is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to keep your congregants aware of your church’s activities without having to regularly visit a website or social media outlet. Even though it’s a great tool, your church’s newsletter probably involves a love/hate relationship. It keeps your congregants informed, so they love it, but you spend so much time preparing it that you hate it.
Sending your e-mail newsletter doesn’t have to be a daunting, dreadful, task. Here are some tips for creating a simple, consistent, and usable e-mail newsletter.
Consistency
If you’ve been reading ACS eNews for a while, maybe you’ve noticed that you receive our newsletter about the same time every month. Consistency is important for church newsletters. First, decide if you want to send your newsletter weekly, biweekly, or monthly, then pick a day of the week to send it, and stick with a schedule. If you send your newsletter on the same day of the week and about the same time, your subscribers know when to expect it and can look forward to it.
