But Easter is not just a high-attendance moment. It is a relationship opportunity. The goal is not only to welcome guests for one Sunday. It is to help them move toward ongoing connection, deeper engagement, and meaningful participation in the life of the church.

That is why follow-up and generosity matter. Both are part of helping people see that they are invited into something bigger than a single event.

Follow up quickly while the visit is still fresh

One of the most important parts of Easter ministry happens after the service ends. Timely follow-up helps guests feel remembered and valued.

A simple follow-up plan might include:

A thank-you email

A text message

A phone call

A handwritten note

The goal is not to overwhelm people. It is to make a personal connection and invite them to take a next step.

Speed matters here. Reaching out within 24 hours can make a real difference. It shows guests they are not just part of a crowd and that your church genuinely cares about relationship.

Keep the next step simple

Follow-up is strongest when it points to one clear next action. This could be a welcome event, a family gathering, a newcomers’ lunch, or another low-pressure opportunity to return.

Churches do not need a long list of offers. They need one good one. A simple invitation is easier to understand and easier to say yes to.

Inspire generosity by connecting it to mission

Generosity is about more than money. It includes time, service, and participation in the mission of the church. Financial giving is one part of that broader picture, and how churches talk about it matters.

Easter is an opportunity to make giving accessible and meaningful. That starts by connecting generosity to impact. When people understand how giving supports ministry, serves families, reaches the community, and helps the church carry out its mission, generosity feels more purposeful.

Stories matter here. Sharing examples of changed lives or ministry impact helps people see giving as participation, not just obligation.

Make giving easy and accessible

Churches should make giving simple for those who want to respond. Since many people no longer carry cash, multiple options are important.

That may include:

Online giving

QR codes on screens or printed materials

Text giving

Traditional offering methods

The point is not to pressure people. It is to remove confusion and make the process easy to understand.

Recurring giving can also be introduced in a practical way. Framed well, it offers convenience, consistency, and a simple way to continue supporting the church’s mission over time.

Measure more than attendance

After Easter, it is worth taking time to evaluate what worked and what should improve next year.

Attendance is one measure, but it should not be the only one. Churches can also look at:

Number of first-time guests

Connect cards completed

Follow-up completed within 24 hours

Return visits in the weeks after Easter

Engagement with next-step events

These measures help shift the focus from a one-day turnout to long-term connection.

Keep momentum going

Easter should not feel like a finish line. It should feel like a starting point.

In the weeks that follow, churches can build on Easter momentum by continuing to share stories of impact, inviting people into community, and reinforcing the mission guests encountered on Easter Sunday. Ongoing communication through email, social media, and Sunday announcements can help keep that connection alive.

Final thought

A strong Easter strategy does not end when the service does. Churches create lasting impact when they follow up thoughtfully, make generosity meaningful, and help people take another step toward community.

Attendance matters, but connection matters more. When churches treat Easter as the beginning of a relationship rather than the end of an event, they create space for people to return, engage, and belong.

Easter may bring more people through your doors than almost any other Sunday, but what happens after Easter matters just as much as what happens during the service. Church Planning (Part 1): How to Invite Clearly and Create a Welcoming Guest Experience

Easter is often the most attended Sunday of the year. It brings a high number of guests, including people who have not been to church in years, people exploring faith, families invited by friends, and those new to the area looking for a church home.

For many of these guests, the first experience is not the parking lot or the front door. It is your website, social media, or an invitation from someone they trust. That means Easter planning is not just about preparing for a large crowd. It is about making it easy for people to say yes to attending and helping them feel comfortable when they arrive.

A helpful way to approach Easter planning is with a simple framework: invite clearly, engage intentionally, and create a clear next step. When churches do this well, Easter becomes more than a well-attended service. It becomes the beginning of real connection.

Start planning early

Strong Easter preparation starts with a clear timeline. Giving your team several weeks to prepare creates room for invitations, volunteer training, reminders, and follow-up instead of cramming everything into the final few days.

A simple timeline might look like this:

Four weeks before Easter: finalize service times and begin promoting them
Three weeks before Easter: encourage the congregation to invite others
Two weeks before Easter: train volunteers and confirm guest flow
Holy Week: send reminders and make Easter details easy to find online

Just as important, make sure roles are clear internally. Staff and volunteers should know who owns communication, hospitality, kids check-in, signage, parking flow, and guest follow-up. Clarity behind the scenes makes the guest experience smoother up front.

Invite clearly and remove uncertainty

Most first-time church visits happen because of a personal invitation. But even when someone is invited by a friend, uncertainty can still keep them from attending.

That is why clear communication matters so much. A strong Easter invitation should quickly answer the questions guests are already asking:

When is the service

Where is the church located

Is there childcare

Where should I park

What should I expect

Simple beats elaborate. A printed invitation card with service times and a QR code linking to your Easter webpage can be an easy, practical tool. Churches can also equip members to share invitations digitally by text, email, or social media.

Make your website and social media work for guests

Before attending, many guests will check your website and social media. Those channels should make Easter details obvious and easy to find.

At a minimum, make sure guests can quickly find:

Service times

Address and directions

Information about children’s ministry

What to expect during the service

A clear link to watch online if streaming is available

If possible, create a dedicated Easter page or homepage feature. The goal is to reduce friction. Guests should not have to hunt for basic information.

Prepare volunteers for first impressions

Volunteers help shape how Easter feels for guests. A warm greeting, a clear answer, or help finding the right room can make a lasting difference.

Before Easter, take time to remind volunteers of a few basics:

Smile and greet people warmly

Offer help without overwhelming guests

Be ready to answer practical questions

Thank guests for coming

This does not require complicated training. It just requires intentionality. People remember how they felt, and volunteers play a big role in that.

Focus on practical hospitality

On Easter Sunday, small details matter. Clear signage, parking help, easy check-in, and volunteers stationed in key places all help reduce stress for guests.

Inside the building, guests should be able to easily find restrooms, children’s ministry, and any welcome or information area. If your service includes elements that may be unfamiliar to guests, such as communion, simple explanation can help people feel more at ease.

A staffed info table or welcome area can also give newcomers a clear place to go if they have questions or want to learn more.

Give guests one clear next step

One of the biggest mistakes churches make is offering too many options at once. Clarity matters more than quantity.

Instead of listing multiple next steps, identify one clear invitation for guests after Easter. Jews and Cultural Catholics? Who belongs without believing?” In the article, Burge revisits the question of religion as cultural identity: “When we’re asked, “Are you religious?” There are a number of different ways someone might justify an affirmative answer. It could be that they attend a house of worship regularly or pray frequently. It could be that they hold specific beliefs about Jesus Christ or Muhammad. Those would be behavior and belief measures of religion. But there’s a third dimension that often gets overlooked: belonging.”

Any of us who have been immersed in the Strengths and Engagement community over the past decade have at least heard, and likely said and meant the words “belonging leads to believing.” The idea is that we become more deeply engaged in our parishes as we move through the more superficial connections, “what do I get?” and “what can I give?” The opportunity for encounter and formation begins when we can answer positively to “Do I belong here?” and “Am I growing?”.

Burge probes this by asking what about those of us who participate because we belong, but do not have a strong or any faith connection to our religion. I inherently grasp the idea of Jewish people who identify as Jewish because that is their ethnic heritage. However, I had not ever focused on that question for Catholics. My mind rushes to those of us who show up only at Christmas or Easter, and many who call themselves Catholic but do not participate in any parish or additional education. Many of us call ourselves “cradle Catholics” because we were born into a family that professed to be Catholic. And Msgr Shea reminds us of the many years of what he calls “Christendom” during which so many of us cradle Catholics belonged and even attended Mass because “that is what we do.”

When I think about it, for my personal experience, it makes sense to identify culturally as Catholic. I grew up with many traditions and celebrations that were more about how various ethnic groups of people acknowledged their Catholicity. I’m comfortable in the environment, comfortable visiting a Catholic parish, and attending Mass. For the first decades of my life, I thought it was pretty much everyone’s experience. A move to South Carolina in my late 20’s showed me that was not true!

There is some good news here. Burge’s graph below shows that the larger percentage of Catholics identify for religious and faith reasons rather than cultural. The report reminds us to continue to focus our efforts on providing people a path to move from belonging to believing.

I find the distinction between cultural and religious adherents very helpful. href="https://www.acstechnologies.com/church-growth/the-vital-role-of-community-outreach-in-church-growth/?source=Top%20of%20Funnel&utm_source=Top%20of%20Funnel&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=WhyIsntMyOutreachWorking">Church outreach efforts are some of the best ways to reach your neighbors for the Gospel and transform your community without ever leaving home.

While every believer may not be called to live on the mission field, we are all called to be missionaries right where God has placed us. And that means making every effort to share the Good News with the people around you through your outreach.

But despite your best attempt, sometimes your outreach just isn’t working. If that happens, you may be left wondering what you did wrong, especially if you feel you’ve put in everything you could to make it a success.

The good news is that even if you’ve fallen victim to one of these outreach pitfalls, they’re easily fixable, so you can see the life-changing impact next time.

#1: You Fail to Follow Up

Planting seeds in your community is a great idea. But even an average gardener knows that nothing will grow if the seeds aren’t tended continually.

Sharing the Gospel with dozens of people at your Fourth of July community picnic is great, but if you don’t follow up with those connections, those people will struggle to grow into mature disciples equipped to make disciples.

For successful outreach, it is essential to have a plan in place beforehand to follow up with each genuine connection.

Just as a gardener would provide water regularly, ensure adequate sunlight, and prevent pests from causing harm, if you want to see the seeds of your outreach grow, you have to be intentional.

While it is true that only the Master Gardener knows if a seed will grow to bear good fruit, He does charge His followers with participating in the care and maintenance of each one.

Effective follow-up after an outreach program or event is just as important as the connections themselves. Those connections need to know that they matter in the long run and that your ministry wants to accompany them on their faith journey.

If you fail to follow up after an outreach effort, that may be a big reason why your outreach isn’t working.

#2: You Aren’t Actually Connecting

If you have dozens of volunteers on site for your outreach event, but they spend more time socializing with each other than connecting with new people, then you don’t have an outreach event. You have a church gathering that some community members attended.

It’s easy to think that you’re making connections and building relationships with people during your outreach programs, especially when you have plenty of church members on hand to make everything a success.

But part of successful outreach is training your volunteers how to connect with people and what is expected of them during their service.

If you find that your outreach isn’t building relationships and that you aren’t making as big an impact as you thought your efforts should be, it’s possible that you aren’t actually connecting.

Sharing the Gospel becomes significantly easier when you have a preexisting relationship with the person you’re trying to share with. And many of those relationships begin with connecting during an outreach event.

With the importance of making connections, it’s absolutely vital that you train your volunteers on how to do this and continually evaluate to ensure it’s happening.

It doesn’t matter how many people you have in attendance if you’re missing the opportunity to introduce them to Jesus.

#3: You’re Prioritizing the Wrong Things

Having beautiful decorations, amazing food, and dozens of fun activities are all good things, but if you aren’t prioritizing the right things for outreach, you’ll struggle to see success.

The main things you should focus on are training your volunteers to build genuine connections and share the Gospel with the people they encounter, having a solid follow-up plan, and finding ways to meet people where they are so that doors can be opened for Gospel conversations.

Everything else is secondary. The other things may help you accomplish your outreach priorities, but they shouldn’t be your primary focus.

The whole point of outreach is to meet the needs of your community and introduce them to the Savior of the world.

If you feel like you aren’t having any luck really connecting with people, it’s possible you’re putting too much emphasis on the wrong things.

Review your priority list as you plan your next event. Ensure that the areas where you’re dedicating resources and manpower are the right ones that will help you achieve the ultimate goals of the outreach effort. As long as those important things are covered, you can allocate as much or as little toward the secondary things as your ministry desires.

Outreach is already a challenging area of ministry to evaluate in terms of success. Planting the seeds of the Good News while meeting the needs of the people around you isn’t always a tangible thing you can measure.

However, if you find that your outreach efforts continually fall short of what you think they should be achieving, take the time to check for these three common pitfalls. Your outreach programs may not have been successful up to this point, but you can easily remedy these things and see the life-changing results you long to see in your community.

If you find that your outreach isn’t building relationships and that you aren’t making as big an impact as you thought your efforts should be, it’s possible that you aren’t actually connecting.

[286,64,67,288
289,290
post-22227","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-church-growth","category-community","category-engagement","category-outreach","tag-church-outreach","tag-community

"Why Isn't My Outreach Working?" You see limited resources, few volunteers, and other, larger churches that seem better equipped to change your community.

While you might not have the largest budget or the biggest pool of volunteers to pull from, God can and will bless your efforts to serve Him in your city, even if you think your impact isn’t that big.

There are 3 very important things you must remember if you want to see the difference your church can make in your community, no matter how big or small your congregation is.

#1: Small Does Not Mean Insignificant

The Bible contains numerous examples that show that size does not equate to value.

In Mark 12, Jesus praises a woman who gave only two small coins because the heart behind her gift mattered more than the amount she gave. And in Matthew 19, Jesus directs His disciples to let the little children come to Him and does not hinder them simply because they are young.

Both stories demonstrate that the Savior of the world cares more about the heart than about its size.

Your ministry may not be as big as the church down the street or have as large a budget as the church across town. But the size of your congregation does not mean your body of believers is insignificant in the Kingdom.

God regularly used the unlikely, the small, and the meek to bring glory to His Name and to change the world.

If you want to make a huge difference in your community, no matter how small your church, you have to believe that small does not mean insignificant.

The Father can and will use your ministry as long as you do everything with a heart longing to serve Him and a desire to see lives changed for eternity.

#2: Even One is Huge to God

The true measure of successful church outreach isn’t how many people you connect with but rather how many make the life-altering decision to give their lives to Christ.

Jesus tells us in Luke 15 that the angels rejoice in Heaven over one sinner who chooses to repent. And He claims in Matthew 18 that a good shepherd will leave 99 sheep to track down and restore a single missing sheep, and that he will rejoice when that sheep is returned to the flock.

You don’t need hundreds of members or thousands of dollars to make genuine connections with the people in your community. Those connections are what allow you to plant the seeds of redemption in the hearts of your neighbors.

It doesn’t matter how much time, money, and effort you put into your outreach programs as long as you are doing all you can with what the Father has given. Because the salvation of just one person matters more than the planting of dozens of seeds that never grow to fruition.

#3: The Heart Matters More

The Gospel is very clear that the heart of the disciple matters more than any word or deed.

While the things you say and do are a reflection of what lies in your heart, it is the motivation and desire behind everything that is important to the Father.

Having 50 people in your pews who are on fire for God and long to see your community transformed by the Good News will do far more than an auditorium of thousands who claim faith but don’t live it out.

The secret to making a huge difference in your community, regardless of the size of your congregation, is to invest in the hearts of your people so they’re equipped to invest in the hearts of your community.

Making a huge difference isn’t about the size of your outreach efforts or the amount you’ve invested in connecting with your community. The size of the difference you make is completely contingent on the transformation that comes from a genuine heart allowing God to move.

When it comes to changing your community and making a difference in the lives of those around you, the size of your congregation doesn’t matter.

You must believe that size does not equal significance, that even one life changed is a big deal to the Father, and that the hearts of your congregants and the people you’re working to reach matter more.

If you truly believe these things, then the success of your ministry will not be limited by how many people you have in your pews. You will have everything you need to make a huge difference in your community and the Kingdom beyond.

ACS Technologies

ACS Technologies sets a new standard in church technology, offering a holistic suite of solutions that streamline administrative tasks and empower your staff to excel in their roles and your church to excel in your community.

In the ever-evolving landscape of church engagement and management, ACS Technologies rises above the rest. Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday: A Week of Outreach Opportunities

The Easter season is a time of new beginnings when people who aren’t part of the Church are more willing to give things a try.

Passion Week (from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday) describes the events of the last week of Jesus’ earthly life before culminating in His death and resurrection. This is a week of reflection as believers prepare for the most important day on the Christian calendar.

And it is the perfect opportunity to do what Jesus did best during His ministry: connect with those in need and introduce outsiders to the love of God.

Church outreach during the Easter season is often limited to egg hunts and a few special services. However, there are numerous ways you can serve those in need and plant life-changing seeds that lead to faith in Jesus as Savior, especially during Passion Week.

Palm Sunday: Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem

Palm Sunday is a day of celebration. The people in Jerusalem celebrated Jesus as king and praised Him as the rightful ruler of Israel.

In anticipation of the week to come and to echo the celebratory nature of Palm Sunday, host a celebratory picnic and egg hunt after your Sunday services.

Passion Week begins and ends with a celebration, so start this week off by honoring Jesus as King and preparing your hearts for the week ahead.

Plan the picnic in a location that encourages your community to participate and select a time that won’t conflict with others’ schedules.

Use Resurrection Eggs or another storytelling device to share the events of the upcoming week and the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

There will likely be people at your picnic and egg hunt who aren’t familiar with the events of Passion Week. So take the time to invite them into fellowship with your congregation and introduce them to the ultimate love story of a Savior willing to die to rescue His people.

Holy Monday: Jesus cleanses the temple

On the first day of Passion Week, Jesus cleansed the temple of those who would defile the sacred space. The people of Jesus’ day had taken something beautiful and made it into a place of ugliness.

While Jesus was focused on removing corruption and restoring the temple as a house of worship, you can use this day to bring beauty back to parts of your community.

Partner with other ministries or organizations to hold a community cleanup day. Many people will likely have to work or attend school during the day, so plan your activities in the late afternoon or evening when most people can participate.

You can pick up trash in local parks, plant flowers in community areas, or help clean up other spots around town that will bring the spaces back to life.

Holy Tuesday: Jesus teaches on the Mount of Olives

Jesus was the ultimate teacher. He took time to answer questions and help people understand the complexities and mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Use this day to connect with and support the teachers in your community who work hard to build up the next generation.

Prepare a special breakfast, assemble goodie bags, or create thank-you cards as a way to acknowledge their commitment to educating others.

Invite members of your congregation to deliver the items and to chat with the teachers about why you’ve chosen this day to celebrate them. And having information ready about your ministry and upcoming services, so teachers can participate in more Passion Week activities if they want to learn more about the Savior of the world.

Spy Wednesday: Judas agrees to betray Jesus

While we don’t know what Jesus was doing on this day, we do know that it was on this day that one of His closest friends and followers decided to betray Him.

Each of the events of Passion Week plays a crucial role in the overall rescue story that God began telling in Genesis.

Use your Wednesday service or Bible study time to invite people to come and ask questions about the events of Passion Week and the story of Jesus. Host an open forum event, either at your church or in a community location, where people can learn more without fear of judgment.

Many will hesitate to ask questions out of fear of looking silly or being mocked for not knowing. So, use this opportunity to answer their questions without feeling intimidated. Have an anonymous question box or designate members of your congregation to ask the more common questions so people can get the answers they need about God without fear.

Maundy Thursday: Jesus and His disciples share the last supper & Jesus is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane

On His last day as a free man, Jesus spent the day with His disciples, sharing a final meal before retreating to pray.

Partner with your local food bank or soup kitchen to provide a special meal for those in need. Break bread with the people in your community who need to see a friendly face and be reminded that Jesus came to die for them, too.

Ask your members to help prepare the meal, contribute financially to the effort, or come and connect with those seeking a warm meal.

Good Friday: Jesus is crucified and is buried in Joseph of Arimethea’s tomb

While the first Good Friday was a day of death and mourning for Jesus and His followers, it is a day of hopeful anticipation for us.

Host a Good Friday service in a local park or other community gathering place where passersby can hear the hope of the Easter story without the intimidation or anxiety associated with attending a regular service.

Offer activities and refreshments to draw people in, and then use the time to share the story of Easter with those seeking the hope offered by the Gospel.

Holy Saturday: Jesus’ body lies in the tomb

Little happened the day after Jesus died, besides a lot of wondering and waiting, even though Jesus had told His followers exactly what would happen.

Use this day to present a Passion Play that tells the story of salvation from start to finish. Ask your congregation to participate in the production, and invite your whole community to the event. If possible, make tickets free to remove any barriers to attending.

Depending on your resources, you can present a semi-professional production, put together a children’s production of the Easter story, or develop something in between. The only requirement is that you use the opportunity to share the truth of the Gospel with those who attend.

Resurrection Sunday: Jesus is raised from the dead

Resurrection Sunday (or Easter Sunday) is the most important day for followers of Christ. While other days like Christmas are significant in their own ways, without the culmination of God’s rescue story in the resurrection, the rest of the days don’t matter.

Throughout all the other outreach activities you conduct during Passion Week, you should invite people to your services on Resurrection Sunday.

Many people who don’t normally attend church are willing to try it out during the Easter season. Ensure your community is aware of your upcoming services, and do everything possible to present your best self.

Ensure you have plenty of volunteers lined up for children and youth, recruit your most outgoing and engaging greeters, and make your Easter services the best they possibly can be.

While you don’t want to put all your effort into the services for Resurrection Sunday and ignore the rest of the year, it is essential to make a good impression on those seeking hope during this time.

The Easter season is one of the few times of the year when those who aren’t connected with the Body of Christ are actively seeking ways to connect. outreach is a vital part of your church’s growth and development. Connecting with those outside the walls of your church, building relationships with them, and showing them the love of Jesus is the best way to draw people in.

Studies show that people are more likely to engage with your church and to make a decision for Christ if they have a prior relationship with believers. Community outreach events are key to establishing and investing in those relationships, allowing you to share the Gospel with your entire neighborhood.

However, one of the biggest challenges that stands in the way of successfully connecting with your community is devising effective ministry outreach ideas that have the potential to transform your entire city.

You want to see those around you come to know their Creator, and you need creative community outreach events to do that. Here are five outreach ideas for your church to connect with your community and change the lives of everyone you encounter.

Idea #1: Revamp Your Easter Egg Hunt

Egg hunts are great ways to draw the community together during the Easter season. Even those who don’t celebrate Easter often look for these kinds of events and are willing to participate in these traditionally Christian activities.

Revamping your egg hunt will help attract new families who may not have previously engaged with your congregation.

Take the time to promote your event throughout your community, find new activities and games to refresh your outreach efforts, and encourage your members to invite their friends and neighbors to hear the truth about Jesus.

Your egg hunt doesn’t have to be an elaborate or complicated event, especially if you’re a smaller congregation looking for effective outreach opportunities.

There are plenty of budget-friendly ways to get attendees excited about the Easter season and open doors to share the true reason we celebrate this time of year.

Idea #2: Bring Easter to Them

Easter is arguably the most significant day in the Christian calendar; therefore, to make the most of your community outreach events, it is essential to connect with all people during this time.

There are people in your community who are physically unable to attend an Easter service at your church. While we often do a good job of bringing Christmas and Thanksgiving to them, Easter is typically placed on the back burner when it comes to these groups.

The people in long-term care facilities and those incarcerated need to hear the Gospel just as much as anyone else. Work with the administrators of your local nursing homes and jails to bring Easter to them.

Take a small worship team (perhaps even just one or two musicians), bring communion, and deliver a Scripture-filled message that shares the Good News of Jesus Christ with those who can’t come to you.

Don’t simplify your service or sacrifice the truth; instead, use these opportunities to share the whole story of God’s love with those who may not have the chance to encounter Him in any other way.

Idea #3: Hold a Drive-Through Passion Play

Drive-through nativities have become extremely popular in recent years, giving people the ability to experience the true story of Jesus’ birth without the cost or time commitment of attending a traditional play.

The Easter season offers a similar opportunity to share the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection in a way that is convenient for others.

Have information about your ministry and strong believers ready to talk with those who have questions after viewing the passion play.

Recruit members of all ages to participate in the story and allow your creative volunteers to use their talents in a way that resonates with your community.

Idea #4: Encourage Students During Finals

If you’ve got a tech school, college, or university in your town, you’ve got young adults preparing for final exams this spring.

Many students are far from home and have limited financial resources. Providing a meal, a goodie bag, or just free coffee during the chaotic final weeks of the semester will mean more to these students than you realize.

Meeting a basic need, such as offering food and encouragement, will open doors for you to connect with them where they are and in a way that truly resonates with them.

College students are often overlooked when it comes to community outreach, so intentionally planning to connect with them will open doors you didn’t know you were missing.

Idea #5: Host a Spring Festival

As the weather warms up, many families are seeking enjoyable outdoor activities to share with their children.

Hosting a spring festival is a great way to draw families to your campus for games, activities, and treats.

Similar to a fall festival, holding a spring celebration provides an opportunity to bring people in, engage with them through fun and excitement, and invite them to connect with your congregation in other ways.

This is a great time to promote your summer activities, such as camps and Vacation Bible School, to give children additional opportunities to hear the Gospel.

Outreach doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. The whole point of these events and activities is to bring the Gospel to those in your community who might not engage with your congregation otherwise.

Take advantage of the warmer weather and the season of fresh starts as we emerge from the winter months to connect with your neighbors and share the love of Jesus.

The Bible contains over 2,300 verses that address the topic of money (Wealth With Purpose). It has the potential to build or to destroy, depending on the priority the holder places on it and how they choose to use it.

While the majority of believers know that we are called to give generously, to bring into God’s storehouse the whole tithe, and to give back to the Father what is His, many still struggle to make that sacrifice year after year.

As a pastor, a significant part of your role is to guide your congregants in becoming healthy disciples who follow Jesus with their whole hearts. But how do you talk to them about money (because you should be talking to them about money) in a way that actually resonates rather than isolates?

With such a touchy subject, you must approach it in the right way.

Here are five steps to help your congregants become cheerful givers through healthy conversations about giving.

Step #1: Be Strategic About When You Discuss Money

Finances play a huge factor in the success of your ministry, whether you have 50 members or 5,000.

Realistically, your church needs financial resources to operate effectively. You need to be able to pay your staff, maintain your campus, purchase study materials, support missions and outreach, and dozens of other expenses.

But while money is essential for running your ministry, you can’t talk about it all the time.

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re being lectured from the pulpit every Sunday. Therefore, you must be strategic about when you discuss money.

There are certain times of year when people are naturally more inclined toward generosity (specifically from Thanksgiving into the new year). And there are other times (like tax season), when your congregants are more likely to let your message about giving go in one ear and out the other.

There are ways to incorporate instruction on generosity into your sermons throughout the year without making your congregants feel burdened by the topic of money again. However, when you want to specifically address giving and finances, ensure you are being intentional about when and how you do it.

Step #2: Prioritize the Heart of the Giver Rather Than the Dollar Amount

While the Bible instructs believers to tithe, in Mark 12:41-44, Jesus observes a widow giving everything she had, whereas the wealthy only gave what was required.

He didn’t praise the woman because of the amount of money she gave, but rather the heart behind her gift.

We often hear the phrase “God loves a cheerful giver” when discussing money, but it is often secondary to emphasizing the amount someone gives.

For example, when pastors preach on giving, it’s easy to focus on reminding your members to give the whole tithe and tell them how much would be possible if every person gave what was asked of them.

And while that is an extremely important part of the money conversation, we need to focus more on the heart behind the gift rather than the gift itself. You have to ask if your members are giving because they long to be obedient or because they think that they have to.

It is especially intimidating for new believers to come into the Body of Christ and immediately be expected to give 10% toward something they’ve just become a part of.

As you work on having healthy conversations about giving, it’s okay to encourage your congregants to simply start somewhere.

Giving requires faith and sacrifice, and both of these take time to grow as one sees God’s faithfulness through the process. If you have a large percentage of your members who’ve never given before, encourage them to start by giving 1% or a small, set dollar amount each month.

Starting small will help them participate in the church’s larger mission without feeling burdened. They’ll be able to build toward full obedience in their giving rather than being overwhelmed by the sudden need to give.

Prioritizing the heart of the giver enables people to grow in their faith and observe how God works in and through them along the way.

Becoming a cheerful giver can take time, and healthy giving conversations must prioritize the heart of the giver.

Step #3: Set Clear Giving Expectations for Your Members

While it’s okay to encourage your congregants to start small in a way that allows them to give cheerfully, even if they aren’t giving the whole tithe, you must set clear expectations for your members so they know what your church is looking for.

One of the primary causes of frustration and discontent is a lack of clear expectations from either side.

If you expect every member of your congregation to give a full 10%, you must communicate this expectation clearly and regularly. It’s okay if this is the goal that your members are working toward rather than the current reality, but they need to know what you’re expecting so they know how to grow.

When new members join, you should have your giving expectations outlined in the new members’ class or membership documentation.

Without a clear goal to build toward, it will be easy for your members to continue giving the same or to opt not to give at all.

Part of healthy conversations about finances is ensuring that your members understand exactly what the Bible says about giving and what your ministry expects from each believer who calls your church home.

Step #4: Use Biblical Principles to Teach Believers How to Give

It is hard to be a cheerful giver if you don’t understand the joy behind why we’re called to give.

The Bible tells us that we give to the church because everything we have belongs to God, so we’re giving back to Him what is already His to further His Kingdom.

Healthy conversations about money have to be built on the foundation of biblical giving principles.

The Bible is very clear about the dangers of wealth and the proper role of money in the lives of believers.

If you want to see your congregants become cheerful givers who bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, you must provide them with a biblical foundation for handling their finances.

Step #5: Regularly Show Your Congregants How Their Giving Impacts the Kingdom

Many people who choose not to give do so because they don’t really know what they’re giving toward, or they don’t see the difference that their contributions can make.

Healthy giving conversations need to include regularly showing your congregants how their giving impacts your ministry and the Kingdom as a whole.

Give updates throughout the year on how member contributions have helped with different areas of your church and what their money has done in the community.

Being a cheerful giver can be a challenge if you don’t think your gift actually makes a difference, so you need to take the time to show your members exactly how each dollar is used to further your ministry.

These giving updates don’t have to accompany a sermon on tithing or a conversation about the budget. You can use mission reports, outreach updates, and ministry impact testimonies to share the fruit produced through giving.

As a pastor, your job is to help your congregation become disciples who are equipped to make disciples. But they can’t do that if they don’t have generous hearts who trust the Father fully with everything He has given to them.

Healthy conversations about giving must be strategic, prioritize the heart of the giver, set clear expectations, utilize biblical principles, and demonstrate the impact of contributions.

You have everything you need to fill your pews with cheerful givers who support your ministry to do all that God has called you to do. With a bit of intentionality and a boldness to share God’s truth about money with the people in your congregation, you can remove the burden from giving and restore the joy that comes with generosity.

You focus on how you can utilize your resources to connect with people in your city who aren’t part of your ministry and introduce them to their Savior.

We put so much weight on those who will be reached that it’s easy to forget that church outreach efforts are just as much about those who are serving.

Christianity isn’t a passive faith. James tells us that faith without deeds is dead (James 2:17-18), while Paul tells us in Ephesians that God has already prepared good works for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

The members of your ministry who are giving to and serving in your outreach programs will benefit from these efforts just as much as those they’re connecting with.

Here are three ways that church outreach will change the lives of your congregants and lead to a deeper faith than they ever expected.

#1: They Will Master Loving Their Neighbor

In the book of Mark, Jesus tells His listeners that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God, while the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31).

While Jesus makes this task sound easy, loving our neighbor is often significantly more difficult to put into practice.

But no matter how challenging, there is no ignoring the command to love those around us as we love ourselves (and yes, we should love ourselves because we were made in the image of God and have been chosen by Him).

The good news is that, like many other skills, loving your neighbor actually becomes easier the more you do it.

By volunteering to serve in outreach programs through your ministry, your members will learn to love their neighbors.

They’ll continually connect with people who look different from them, who have different professions, different beliefs, different everything. They’ll have to choose to be loving toward others during every interaction.

And each time that they choose to love, they’ll become more and more like the ultimate model of love, the Man they’re trying to introduce to those same neighbors: Jesus Christ.

#2: They Will Learn to Give Generously

Giving is a vital component of effective church outreach. Both financial contributions and the giving of time and talents play vital roles in reaching your community for Christ.

When your members choose to participate in your ministry’s outreach efforts, they’re deciding to give what they have to further the Kingdom of Heaven.

Just like loving your neighbor, giving generously is a learned skill. True generosity requires sacrifice and complete trust that God will use your gifts for your good and His glory.

By regularly serving and giving to your ministry’s outreach programs, your members will have the opportunity to practice generosity in a way that has a tangible impact on the lives of others.

Outreach often focuses on what your ministry is hoping to do for others. However, don’t forget that outreach can also benefit those who have already given their lives to Jesus by helping them grow as disciples and providing them with opportunities to live out their faith.

#3: They Will Practice Sharing Their Testimonies

One of the most important aspects of our faith is sharing it with others. Growing as disciples is a huge step in our journey to become like Christ, but a key tenet of that journey is the desire to draw others into the same life-changing relationship.

But sharing your testimony can be extremely intimidating, if not outright terrifying, for many people. While they long to see others come to know Jesus the same way they do, it can be intimidating to share the Gospel with others.

Many factors contribute to the hesitancy people feel when sharing their testimonies, including fear of rejection, fear of failure, uncertainty about the right answers, and concern about letting God down.

But Jesus doesn’t instruct believers to only make disciples if they feel comfortable doing it or if they’re confident in their ability to clearly share the Gospel with others.

And, surprisingly, sharing your testimony gets easier the more you do it, just like loving your neighbor and giving generously.

Spreading the Good News to those in your community is the main objective of your outreach programs. However, through these efforts, your members will have the opportunity to practice sharing their testimonies, thereby building their confidence and learning how to share the love of Jesus with others.

Church outreach has the potential to transform the lives of the people in your community, but it is also the perfect opportunity to help your members grow in their own spiritual walks with Jesus.

Becoming a disciple is a life-long process, with each person spending whatever time they have from the moment they choose Christ until their final breaths, striving to be more like Him.

Learning to become like Jesus takes practice and commitment, and your community outreach programs provide your members with the perfect training ground.

While they’re working to show others the truth of the Gospel, they’ll master loving their neighbor, learn to give generously, and practice sharing their testimonies.

So, as you’re looking at your outreach plans and finding the best ways to benefit your community, remember that each time your congregants serve or give toward your outreach efforts, they’re also benefiting in ways you might not have considered.

Outreach is all about changing lives, so let it change the lives of your members!

Outreach is designed to help you connect with your community and open doors to share the Gospel with your neighbors.

But what do you do when you have a vision for outreach that doesn’t match the resources you have available?

Limited resources can make successful and effective outreach a challenge, but a small budget is not a deal breaker when it comes to having a big impact on those around you.

There’s a saying floating around that “if it’s God’s will, it’s God’s bill.” While this is absolutely true, and He does provide when He calls you to do something, He also charges His children with being good stewards of the things He’s already given to them.

So when you have a vision for outreach but aren’t sure how to make ends meet in a way that really makes a difference in your community, here are eight ways you can stretch your resources to make the most of what the Lord has already provided.

1. Prioritize Essentials

As you’re going through the planning process for your community outreach programs, take the time to prioritize the essentials.

Whenever you have a great idea, it’s easy to get carried away with all of the things you’d like to do to have a successful event. But not all of those things are essential to making a big impact.

Let’s say you’re hosting a cookout for your community. While special plates and napkins would be super fun, they aren’t necessary to connect with attendees, especially if they cost significantly more than plain utensils.

When it comes to stretching your resources, one of the most effective methods is to prioritize only what is essential for success. If you end up with extra resources, you can always add in the fun extras later. Start with what you actually need to make the program work, and then build from there.

2. Look for Cost-Effective Alternatives

When you have a big idea to help others see God moving, you want to give it your best. But the most expensive isn’t necessarily the best, especially if it puts your ministry in a financial bind elsewhere.

Seeking cost-effective alternatives can help you make a significant impact without incurring substantial expenses.

If you want to send special treats to all of the residents at your local assisted living facility, consider asking some of your talented congregants to make the things you’d like to send. Ask your children’s ministry to make cards, and recruit your youth to help deliver the treats.

You’ll be able to include more of your members in a special outreach opportunity while also reducing costs by avoiding the purchase of more expensive items.

3. Reuse and Recycle

There’s no rule that says outreach needs the shiniest and newest thing every time to be a success. In fact, the opposite is usually true, particularly when you’re trying to connect with those who have physical needs and don’t want to see wealth flaunted.

Your ministry may have a closet full of items that you’ve used for previous events and activities, just begging to be put to good use again.

One of the best ways to stretch your resources to make a big impact is to reuse and recycle the things you already have lying around.

Some of the most creative and exciting decorations for Vacation Bible School are those that have been repurposed and transformed into something new. The funnest games at the fall festival are the ones that have a fresh coat of spray paint and have been transformed into something fresh.

Reusing and recycling items that you already have kills two birds with one stone: you’ll be able to stretch your outreach resources further and demonstrate proper stewardship of the things you already have.

4. Borrow from Other Churches

It’s easy to forget that the other churches in your community aren’t your competition. You’re all part of one Body working toward the same goal of bringing people to Christ.

And because you’re all working with the same purpose (even if the details vary from church to church), you should share your resources and partner with the churches in your area.

If you know you need something special for an outreach effort, but it’s not feasible within your budget, consider checking with other churches in your community. See if they will loan you the items you need or allow you to buy them for a smaller fee than purchasing new.

The same should be true of your ministry when others come seeking ways to enhance the success of their outreach programs. If you expect other ministries to assist you, you must be willing to assist them in return when the time comes.

Remember, we all want the same thing: to see every person proclaim Jesus as Lord.

5. Partner with Local Organizations

Just like there’s no rule that you have to buy new for effective outreach, there’s also no rule that you have to do it alone. In fact, it’s encouraged that you work together with others in your community to make the biggest impact!

There are likely several wonderful organizations already established in your community that are dedicated to serving the same people you hope to connect with.

Whenever possible, seek local partners to collaborate with. You’ll maximize your resources, capitalize on their established reputation, and have the opportunity to connect with more people than you could on your own.

6. Hit Sales and Find Discount Codes

When it comes to stretching your resources and maximizing a small budget, sales and discount codes will become your best friends.

If you have a special event coming up in October, consider taking advantage of the September Labor Day sales on the essentials you need for success.

Many companies offer a discount code that can be used in the future after a purchase is made. Hold onto those so you can save additional money next time.

Check out wholesalers and dollar stores for additional savings when you need larger quantities or easy decorations.

7. Ask for Donations

Effective community outreach is a team effort. Your church staff shouldn’t have to do it all on their own. You need your congregation to participate to have the big impact you long to see.

And part of including your members means you can and should ask for their support for your outreach programs.

Requesting donations shouldn’t be limited just to financial contributions. Ask your congregants to prayerfully consider how they are being called to help with each effort. One person may choose to make a monetary donation, another may donate tangible resources, and yet another may give their time or talents to make the outreach a success.

No matter how your members choose to participate, don’t limit their ability to be a part of what God is doing in your church and community by choosing not to ask for their help.

You shouldn’t be relying solely on your church’s budget to make your outreach efforts happen. Allow others to be part of what you’re doing and invite them to share in the blessing of seeing others come to know Jesus.

8. Change Your Mindset

In our modern materialistic society, it can be easy to buy into the idea that you have to go big or go home. You may see the big church across town invest thousands of dollars into a community picnic while you’re wondering if you have the funds to make an Easter egg hunt happen.

There’s no right or wrong way to do outreach as long as you’re leaning on God and allowing Him to guide your efforts.

To truly achieve a significant impact with a limited budget, you must change your mindset. You don’t have to do the biggest, best thing ever to see lives changed in your community. You can and should stretch your resources and think creatively about what you have.

You need to believe that God will use your efforts to further His Kingdom as long as you give what you have and give Him control.

Trust that no matter how small your budget may be or how tight your resources are, God can move in mighty ways with just a few loaves and fish if they’re given with the right heart.

The size of your impact is not contingent on the size of your budget. Use these eight ways to stretch your resources, and you’ll see the kind of impact you long to see when you trust the Father to move.
