Using Technology to Help You Live Intentionally

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us all that we must be intentional about the way we live if we want to build relationships and accomplish our goals.

The pandemic taught us that life no longer happens automatically.

It is no longer possible to maintain relationships without effort. Although, was that ever really possible?

We are blessed to live in an age when technology exists to help us with intentional living. We have the opportunity to use our devices for more than just scrolling through social media. We can use well created apps and websites as tools to build relationships with friends and family members, as well as keep ourselves organized so we have enough time and mental space for the things that really matter.

Before beginning any plan to live intentionally, it is essential that you reflect on your values.

What is truly important to you? How do you want to live? With whom do you want to spend your time? In what kinds of activities do you want to invest your time? Figure out for yourself what you want your life to look like and then make purposeful movements toward that end. During your free time, use your digital note taking apps to record your thoughts about your values. This can be done all at once when you have an hour, or it can be done when you have 5 minutes standing in line waiting to pay for groceries. Take the time to reflect.

Once you’ve determined what’s important to you, live your life in that direction. Use all the technological tools at your disposal to make happen the things that you want to happen. Here are our best suggestions for ways that you can use the technology that’s all around us to help you live intentionally right now.

In Relationships

  • Connect with people every day who are important to you through text, email, or video call.
  • Use online shopping carts to create Christmas or birthday lists for loved ones well ahead of time – when you see something they would like, save it to the list for later. This helps you find more meaningful gifts rather than rushing around at the last minute and buying something they might appreciate less.
  • Use food delivery apps to send treats to special people.
  • Use your calendaring app to schedule meetings/get-togethers. Schedule alerts so you don’t forget and are on time.

Developing Hobbies

  • Organize research in online organizing websites.
  • Join online discussion groups to learn more and increase your expertise, become friends with others with the same hobbies.
  • Use note-taking apps to brainstorm ideas regarding your hobby, how you want to improve your skills, things you want to purchase/acquire.
  • Post examples of your hobby work on social media, invite feedback and constructive criticism

For Rest and Reflection

  • Use meditation apps to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection.
  • Use music service apps to listen to calming instrumental music in the middle of a hectic day.
  • Follow your favorite poet online and read their poems to bring a sense of calm whenever you feel stress overwhelm you.
  • Keep an online journal to record your feelings and reflect on the blessings of life.

Preserving Family Life

  • Before scheduling anything, schedule margin time for rest and reflection. Guard that time closely.
  • Use calendaring apps to keep your family activities organized. Allow kids to plan things by sharing the app with them on their devices.
  • Share family shopping apps so that you can make shopping trips intentional, limiting impulse buys and decreasing the number of trips to the store.
  • Be intentional about remembering family birthdays, holidays and other special days by setting reminders on your phones. Wish people on their special days and plan well in advance for gift buying.

Living intentionally is possible today! Use every technological tool at your disposal and you’ll have the time and space needed for the things that are truly important.
