Pain Points Every Church is Feeling Right Now: Personal Exhaustion

Pain Point 3: Navigating personal exhaustion while caring for your church.

 You’re exhausted. You’re drained. You need a break. For the past 3 months, you have been trying to make big changes in your church to adjust to the ongoing pandemic. You’re trying to keep your ministries in-tact and your staff connected, all while trying to keep yourself healthy.

Where does it end? When do you get a break? Even though it feels like there is no end in sight to this pandemic, you can still find little ways to take care of yourself to avoid burnout and frustration. You need to be the best you so you can serve your congregation and community.

 Here are 5 easy ways you can do to care for yourself:

  1. Have Alone/Quiet Time
    1. I know this seems simple. Hear me out. Take an hour during the day and split it up. 30 minutes in the morning and at night to have a quiet time with the Lord. Ask him to renew your mind and to help you keep pushing even though you’re tired.
  2. Take a Walk
    1. It’s proven that exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety. You don’t have to take an hour and power walk the whole time. Take your spouse, dog, kids, neighbor, etc. and take a light 15-20 minute walk. Take it in silence or talk about anything just NOT work or anything stressing you out! Good and calm topics ONLY! 
  3. Do Your Hobby
    1. What’s your hobby? Is it knitting, painting, playing an instrument, taking pictures, reading? Whatever it is, do it! I am sure if it’s your hobby then it makes your heart feel full. Carve out time each week to spend a little time doing whatever it is! 
  4. Spend Time With Your Family
    1. What’s better than spending time with people who love you the most? Play board games together or cook, whatever you like to do together. 
  5. Pay Attention To Your Thinking 
    1. The world is really negative right now. It’s too easy to get bogged down by the news we watch and the Facebook posts we see. When you start to feel negative, try to think about 3 things you are grateful for. Thank God that he blessed you with another day, being able to serve him. 

If we don’t take care of ourselves, burnout is unavoidable and can be detrimental to our wellbeing. Remember that you are still a human outside of your position at your church. Prioritize what you need so you can serve the way you want to and need to.
